Due – LAST chance to turn in anything for the second quarter.  Books close on Friday.  ALL will be graded by Monday (or at least that is the hope).  Remember, if it is not graded yet, and you did not do it, you will then get a zero.  So…the current grade is not accurate – it could go up, or down.

Today is the Mid-term exam.  MUST turn in the review sheet BEFORE the exam for the extra points.  THIS test is 20% of your semester grade.  Any phones seen will be taken for the day – the first time.  Any seen out during the test will result in a zero on the test.  ONLY have a pencil on your desk.

Due – LAST day to turn in portfolio (-25).   REMEMBER  to note any pieces that are in the portfolio, but were not looked at on the due date.  Those will get 1/2 credit on HW.  Last day to turn in Close Reader.

“Exposition of the Space Shuttle Challenger” P. 429-431.  Look at page 431 first.  Listen to Speech. Count off 1-3. Champion your # question as you read.

Reread the lines indicated with each question below. Answer YOUR question, citing text evidence.

  1. Lines 1–6: What is Reagan’s general purpose or purposes for giving this speech? What persuasive technique does he use in lines 4–6? Note that “Nancy” in line 4 refers to the president’s wife.
  2. Lines 35–37: What persuasive technique is Reagan using when he says, “We don’t hide our space program. We don’t keep secrets and cover things up. We do it all up front and in public. HW – Senior Portfolio is due on Friday.  Those who turn it in then will get ten extra points.  Change – will accept on Monday for full credit.  Tuesday is 25 points off.  Also, missing pieces will be given half credit for HW if in the portfolio (must have a paper noting what is there that was not turned in before).   Mid-term is next week on Thursday/Friday.

READ “THE BATTLE WITH GRENDAL” (415 – 419) and answer on your own paper the following questions with evidence:
12 – Lines 233–240: Note the punctuation that indicates the caesura in some of these lines. How does the rhythm created by those pauses reinforce the action described?
13 – Lines 233–261: What details reinforce the idea of Grendel as a force of evil? How does this view of Grendel increase suspense? What foreshadowing is in this passage? Why does the poet include it?

15 – Lines 290–305: What do the setting details in this passage reveal about Anglo-Saxon civilization?

OBJECTIVES AND STANDARDS REVIEW

TURN IN THE RESUME’ FOR SENIOR PORTFOLIO AT START OF CLASS.  THIS WILL BE CREDITED AND GIVEN BACK AT END OF CLASS.  NOTE – SOME DATE CHANGES ON SENIOR PORTFOLIO.

ROUGH DRAFT – Share with another student.  Mark up copy, sign your name, discuss with the person, and return. 

30 Minutes.

Does it have a clear thesis?

Evidence to support reasons (articles that are cited)?  All the articles used, and at least one more?

Counterclaim with evidence?

Written in a academic voice?  Active?  NOT 1st person.  Good transitions?

Solid conclusion with restatement of thesis and good ending?

Has a Work Cited Page with the articles from the book and at least one other?

The rough draft and critique will be turned in with the final essay on Thursday.  This part is worth 25%.  The Final is worth 75%.

Read the section for Beowulf (412-415 ) and on your own paper fully answer these questions WITH textual evidence (like you did the Grendal part in class).  Will read as a class.  Turn in as exit sheet.

6. Lines 109–124: Which details tell you about Beowulf? What conclusions about the traits most valued by the Anglo-Saxons can be drawn from this description?

7.  Lines 116–129: Explain why “none of the wise ones regretted his going.”

8.  Lines 127–133: Why does Wulfgar request that the Geats leave their weapons outside the hall?

9.  Lines 134–159: Explain what Beowulf, seen in “the silvery metal of his mail shirt/Gleaming with a smith’s high art,” represents to the Danes. Examine what Beowulf says to Hrothgar about himself and his past deeds. Why does he appear to boast about his accomplishments?

10. Lines 160–175: Explain Beowulf’s reasoning behind the method he will use to fight Grendel. What does this reveal about the relationship between warrior and leader? What details reveal Beowulf’s attitude toward Hrothgar? Why does he feel this way?

11. Lines 214–224: How does Hrothgar’s speech reflect the importance of courage and community?
