11/23/09  - IMPORTANT

Posted 11/20 @ 9:00 PM

I have once more extended the due date for your webquest MLA documentation essay.  It is due today or tomorrow.  If you wait until after Thanksgiving I will accept it with a PaynterPoint.  NO CREDIT AFTER THAT DATE.

If you turned it in on Friday – check your original and make sure you cited it correctly.  If not, redo the essay and turn it in again. That means the parenthetical and the works cited / references  must be per the MLA/APA format.  CITING THE ESSAY CORRECTLY WAS THE POINT OF THE ESSAY.  On this site there are two citation machines and three other documents or sites to view the correct way to cite.  On my SMA website there are two PowerPoints – one for MLA and the other for APA (the same ones we already viewed in class).  If you remember, Maj. Austin also told you months ago that the school store has a lamenated information sheet available for purchase that covers most you need to know.  Do your own search if this is not enough.  You will get hundreds of hits.  This is your essay and your grade.

Once again –  a great essay without the proper citations will get you a zero.  You need more than one reference, but this assignment does not need a lot.  Two or three will do.  It just needs to be done correctly.  Remember that this is a project grade. You will have had almost TWO WEEKS to write and cite a five-paragraph essay (that is a month in block time).  If you do not have the proper form and citations on your literary analysis paper you will start at a 50, so please do yourself a favor and look at the helps you have been given and do this assignment properly.  THOSE WHO DO NOT DO THIS ONE PROPERLY WILL BE GIVEN ANOTHER ONE TO DO, so do it right this time if you don’t want to do another essay…and another…and another…until it is done right.

NOTHING IS TOO OFTEN REPEATED UNTIL IT IS SUFFICIENTLY LEARNED.

Also…I have decided that this quarter the dictionary sheet and allusions will be optional.  Not extra credit, but optional.  For those who do all their other homework/classwork assignments perfectly doing these will not help your grade, but for the majority who can use a boost in that 20% catagory  I  STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU CONTINUE HANDING THEM IN. . . and on time.

QRA – 400 PAGES

ENGLISH III/ENGLISH III HONORS

TODAY we will look at HRLP #21 and you will be expected to complete the assignment sheet.  It is due tomorrow.  HONOR STUDENTS HAVE A COPY OF THE BOOK – THEY MAY MEET WITH THEIR “FAULKNER” GROUP during this time.

TODAY we will look at William Faulkner and “A Rose for Emily”, which is a great story.  What we do not finish will wait until tomorrow.  IF ABSENT, YOU CAN FIND THIS ON THE INTERNET.  PLEASE READ ON YOUR OWN.

NO VOCABULARY TEST TOMORROW.  Unit #7 is due on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.

REMEMBER THAT YOUR LITERARY ANALYSIS PAPER THESIS IS DUE ON 11/30  - EVERYONE

Honors Students will also present their Faulkner novella on 11/30.  Pages count for QRA total.

YOU  NEED to teach the class: the characters, plot, literary elements, and your own observations and opinion.

Heard from the sub.  Not happy with the report I got about 2nd period’s behavior on Thursday.  Seniors should know how to behave in the classroom – no matter who is the teacher.  I expect much better today.  I may ask one of the administrators to stop by.  Hope  you are ready for an Othello test next week!!!  It will be on Monday or Tuesday.  Take good notes.  All the class had to do was behave, watch the video, and take notes.  The test will be taken with the use of your notes – not the print-out.  Read the print-out and it will help in your understanding.  You may take notes on the handout, also.

Today the dictionary sheet is due.

English IV will finish Shakespeare on Monday, take the Othello test today or Tuesday, and share the rough draft of each person’s short story either Monday or Tuesday.  On Tuesday we will begin the defense of your research paper and have a vocabulary test on the literary terms.

English III/English III Honors will not have a vocabulary test on Tuesday.  The class will defend their research papers on Monday and we will do peer critiques of the rough draft of the short stories (if we have time).  Notes for the video’s should be turned in by you at the end of each film.  Those who were absent will be excused from the film played the day you were out.

Those who bring a sheet before formation (7;00-7:15) with the word OTHELLO on it (and their name) will receive a PaynterPoint.

11/5/09

There will be a substitute teacher in my class today and tomorrow.  I will be in Alabama conducting a memorial service for my father who passed away a couple of months ago.  Please show the utmost courtesy to this person.   Any problems will be looked at with double results when I return.   Detailed instructions have been given to the sub and he has been provided with my cell phone number if he has further questions.

Today your allusions are due.  Tomorrow your dictionary sheet is due.  Notes need to be taken on the dvd’s you will be watching. English III and English III Honoros classes need to turn their notes in each day.  English IV need to keep their notes for an open-note test next week.

I stayed at school grading and entering grades last night until after seven.  I have a few more things to do, but hopefully (now that the printer is fixed) I will have print-outs for all today.

This week is about finishing up and getting ready for the mid-term.  Review sheets will be passed out today.  You need to answer the questions and study.  I will not be giving you the answers – only the questions, so don’t guess.  Studying the wrong answer does not help anyone.

FINISH STRONG….

10/21/09

Sorry for no formal calendar this week and no updates on Monday and Tuesday.  I am in the process of moving and did not have Internet at home.  The due dates are posted in class on the white-board.  Buckle down and finish well.

So…this is the last full week before the end of the quarter.  The research paper was due last FRIDAY.  The QRA is due this FRIDAY.  Mid-term is on MONDAY.  We will be finishing up The Crucible in English III and looking at the rest of the Renaissance in English IV.  The Shakespeare plays will fall in the next quarter grading.

HRLP will continue next quarter.  This one end on Chapter 20.

I highly recommend all review handouts given in association to the literature you have covered in class.  The exam will be scantron and have 50 questions.  Start studying now.  It is worth 10% of your grade.  All have about 25% – 30% of your grade still out there.  That is make-or-break work.  Those failing can still pass and those passing can still fail – you choose.

ALL MAKE-UP WORK MUST BE DONE BY THIS THURSDAY.  See me if there is a solid reason that you need more time or need to take an Inc. because of a long absence due to illness.

Many are taking one kind of testing or another this week, but don’t lose track of the due dates.

The QRA must be in on FRIDAY.  Paynter Points will not be accepted for late turn-in.  If it comes in on Monday I will deduct 25%. After Monday this 10% grade will be a ZERO.

TOMORROW ALL SHOULD HAVE HRLP #20 IN AND ENGLISH III NEEDS TO TURN IN ACT III.

REVIEW SHEETS FOR THE MID-TERM EXAM AND PRINT-OUTS WILL BE GIVEN ON THURSDAY.   Check the print-out against the papers you have returned to you.   If there are any differences present them and I will correct.

Note the EXTRA CREDIT offers if your grade needs a boost.  Also, Paynter Points will be collected on Monday.  Tuesday you will receive a new set.  Turned in coupons gain extra credit.

NEXT TUESDAY THERE WILL BE NO VOCABULARY TEST.

10/16/09

10/13/09

I had one person who gave me their opinion from Monday’s blog.  Okay, so am I to assume that no one cares if I continue with Paynter Points this next quarter or not?  Or is it that only one person checks this blog, therefore all the rest (with the exception of the three people that have documented that they have no home computer) are not doing your homework (checking this site is part of your homework) and therefore I should be counting off on employability for that?

IF YOU ARE CHECKING THIS – GO BACK TO YESTERDAY’S ENTRY AND DO WHAT IT SAYS AND I WILL AWARD YOU THE SAME PRIZE.

ALL – I HAVE DECIDED NOT TO HAVE A DICTIONARY SHEET THIS WEEK.

You have an assembly, so I don’t expect to see you.  However, you do need to read HRLP #18 and do the sheet.  Your vocabulary test (#4) will be on Wednesday and those who did not do their theme project will do them on Wednesday – unless we do have some time in class.  If that happens we will continue with the projects.

DON’T FORGET THE RESEARCH PAPER IS DUE ON FRIDAY.

English IV (2nd)

You have a vocabulary test (SAT 81-100) TODAY.  You also need to turn in HRLP #17.  You should have read the first act of your play.  We may do HRLP #18 in class, but we will see.  We will watch part of a biography of Shakespeare.  You will have questions to answer while watching this.  Not power nap time.

DON’T FORGET THE RESEARCH PAPER IS DUE ON FRIDAY.

English III/English III Honors (4th)

You have a vocabulary test today (4th) and your workbook is due.  Flashcards are still worth 10 pts.  If you missed the last test today at lunch is the last chance to take it (unless you have been absent for multiple days). AFTER TODAY IT WILL REMAIN A ZERO!!!!

FINISHING UP THEME PRESENTATIONS (HONOR’S ONLY).

TURN IN HRLP #17 (WILL DO IN CLASS) AND START HRLP #18 (IF WE HAVE TIME).

10/12/09

NEED MY HAND RETURNED!!!!!

HOPE YOU USED YOUR FRIDAY GIFT OF THREE HOURS OF “PLAYING HOOKY” TO CATCH UP ON THINGS.  You got credit for a full-day, but only attended for half the time.  Great deal!

Write your opinion on the following and give it to me in class for ten points on Tuesday’s vocabulary test.  THIS WILL HELP ME DECIDE WHAT TO DO ABOUT THIS SITUATION.  I don’t continue what does not work and is not appreciated.  THIS HAS NEVER BEEN A PROBLEM IN PAST YEARS.  I may do a “by-class” arrangement.  Classes that don’t appreciate it and abuse it will not get new coupons next quarter.

Each quarter I give every student eight Paynter Points and a number of opportunities to earn more.  These coupons allow students to turn work in late and to use the restroom during class (both exceptions to the stated rules).  If they are not used they are collected at the end of the quarter and count as extra credit.  I have looked at other teacher’s sites and the norm is to either NOT ALLOW LATE WORK AT ALL or to take substancial points off.  No “get out of jail free” coupons were available.

I instituted this program to help students and to incentivise them to stay in the room during class and to turn things in on time, however some are using it as the nomal way to handle work and then complaining to me when they run out of Paynter Points.  Late work should be the exception, not the rule.  As a result of this reality I am considering not giving these coupons next quarter.  I will allow late work, but it will be at a 25% deduction for each day late (the same as something now not turned in with”paper” now).  Those who are absent or have an IEP that gives them extended time already know the policy there (if not see the note at the end of this post).

Tell me what you think and offer an argument as to why I should keep Paynter Points.  Not having them will save paper, ink, and the hassle I have of grading and putting work in out of sequence.  Also, I don’t have to count them and give credit at the end of the quarter.  It needs to be a win-win, or they go away.

All:

QRA 700 check

Thesis redo for full-credit (will be 50% if not returned or returned without the original) and late turn-in (50% off)

Book Checks – All (I WILL CALL YOU UP)

Honors III should have all three books and should have paid the material fee of $15 (difference if you had the two books included in this fee).  Minus $7.50 if you have a copy of Elements and $3.00 if you have Scarlet Letter.  HRLP bought from me cost $11.

English III should have two books (those that also have HRLP, please bring it) and have paid the material fee of $15 (difference if you had the two books included in the fee). Minus $7.50 if you have a copy of Elements and $3.00 if you have Scarlet Letter.  HRLP bought from me cost $11.

English IV should have the Elements of Style (those with HRLP need to bring it, too) and have paid the material fee of $10 (difference if you had the book that came with the fee).  Minus $7.50 if you have a copy of Elements.  HRLP bought from me cost $11.

REQUIRED BOOKS MAY BE BORROWED FOR ONE PAYNTER POINT A DAY (IF AVAILABLE).

REMEMBER THAT YOUR VOCABULARY TEST IS TOMORROW – STUDY AND DO ANY WORK THAT WAS ASSIGNED.

ENGLISH III AND ENGLISH III HONORS:

Turn in HRLP #8 (if you have not done so)

There will be an assessment on the Introduction to The Scarlet Letter  (”The Custom House”) that you were assigned to read.  THIS WILL BE A TAKE-HOME OPEN-BOOK TEST, SO THAT GIVES YOU A BIT OF A REPRIEVE IF YOU DID NOT DO THE READING. THOSE WITHOUT BOOKS NEED TO PAY THE MATERIAL FEE.  CHAPTER READINGS AND ASSIGNED WORK WILL BE DONE OUTSIDE OF CLASS, so you need the book.

9/18/09

All students are to check this site EACH DAY.

NO NEW HRLP sheets due tomorrow.  We will do #8 in class (English III/Honors).  English IV will resume work in HRLP on Monday.

Don’t forget your Dictionary Sheets.

English IV – READ your tale and bring the Canterbury Tale character analysis to class.

English III/English III Honors do and bring your writing option.

ALL should have paid the material fee, but many have not.  Reading assignment in this material begins TODAY.  Bring the  books you have been given.  Honors students must have all three books.  Eng III needs the Elements and Scarlet Letter books.  Eng IV are required to pay the fee and receive an Elements book.  Basic fee is $15 for Eng III and $10 for Eng IV students.  The retail value of the books exceeds the fee.  All honors are required to have a copy of HRLP.  They may be purchased from me for $11.  TODAY I will check for complianace and deduct Employability points for those who have not acquired required material and paid their portion of the class material fee.

Half sheet that was sent home with print-outs must be in today.  Ten points will be deducted from your weekly employability if this does not happen.  Progress reports will be filled out by me on Monday.  The ONLY  assignments that those that are absent are not responsible for is the Bellwork (done at the start of class) and any “classroom” activity that cannot be done outside of class.  All homework, tests, or projects are due within three days of return (day of return if the assignment was given before the absense).  A ZERO will remain if the make-up work is not done in a timely method.  Absent students need to stop by my room and talk at lunch or afterschool if what is due is not clear.

With the online and in-class postings it is impossible to be uninformed about what is happening and due in class, unless you want to be ignorant about these things.  Ignorance will earn you a ZERO on missed assignments.    In the room is posted a weekly calendar, a listing of what is due each day on the whiteboard, and the bellwork on the back cabinet.  The calendar is posted on both this site and the school site.

9/17/09

Have signed and return sheet attached to print-out.  Failure to return by Friday will result in ten point being deducted from this week’s Employability.  On Monday mid-quarter grades (progress reports) will be processed.  Any missing work needs to come in with the appropriate forms (for those that are still eligible).  If you missed this week’s vocabulary test – make it up Thurs. or Friday or it will show on the progress report as a zero.

All students need to pay material fee to receive needed books.  HRLP is an additional $11.  Honor students MUST have a copy and others are strongly encouraged to either purchase one from me or obtain their own.  Friday I will check all books, so Eng. IV needs to bring the Element book and English III needs to bring all three (or two if not honors).  If you have a copy of HRLP bring that also.  Any student who has taken a class copy or borrowed one needs to return it or they will be charged for a replacement.

HRLP #7 is due in 1st and 4th period.

2nd period will continue reading the Prologue for Canterbury Tales. We may not get back to HRLP until Monday.

All – don’t forget that your dictionary sheet is due on Friday.

9/16/09

Okay, we will check QRA today.  THE MAGIC NUMBER IS 300.  The number next Monday is 400.

Vocabulary Test Unit I, book, and cards today.

GRADE PRINT-OUTS ARE GOING HOME TODAY.  PLEASE HAVE PARENTS SIGN AND RETURN THE HALF SHEET THAT IS ATTACHED TO THE FORM.  If this is not done by Friday points will be deducted from Employability.

POSTERS NEED TO BE TURNED IN, IF NOT TURNED IN ALREADY.

The material fees need to be brought and all honors students need to either purchase How To Read Literature Like a Professor on their own, or purchase from me the copies I got for you at 25% off ($11).  Home reading assignments will begin soon and the book is not available online.  Yesterday was the LAST day that extra credit was given for the book.  Non-honors students are encouraged to also get a copy, BUT ARE NOT REQUIRED TO DO SO.

This weekend all English III students will begin reading The Scarlet Letter. Those that have not paid the material fee will need to read the portion assigned online, or check a book out of the library.   No books will be issued until the fee is paid.  THE FEE ALSO COVERS A COPY OF THE ELEMENT OF STYLE, and other classroom materials.  Those with their own books will have that amount deducted from the fee.

9/15/09

QRA DID NOT GET CHECK YESTERDAY.  WILL BE CHECKED TODAY (300).

English III and English III Honors received vocabulary books last week, but some missed the “memo” that they were to do the practice for Unit I.  The test was to be TODAY, but I have decided to extend it to Wednesday.  So…on Wednesday you must have the book done (Unit I) and take the test.  I gave instructions to the sub and most did get done, but I’m giving you guys the benefit of the doubt.  DON’T MAKE ME SORRY.

Wednesday I will be sending home grade print-outs.

Everyone should have HRLP #6 today.  No excuses.

Material fee needs to be brought in and books dispursed.

English IV – YOU WILL HAVE YOUR SAT 1-20 TEST TODAY.

9/14/09

Remember to bring your QRA sheet.  The pages should be at 300.

Material fee needs to be brought today or tomorow.  Those wanting/needing to purchase the How to Read Literature Like a Professor book should bring an additional $11 for that book.

A grade print-out will go out tomorrow or Wednesday.  It will reflect grade up until last Friday (9/11), so if you have to make-up the Voc. test or turn in homework – do so today or they will remain a zero on the print-out.  Remember that you only have THREE days to make up missed work (unless special arrangements are made).

I will try to have a vocabulary review for those in the F book and using the SAT words.  Those honor students in the G book will need to study on their own.  The test is Tuesday.  All with books need to have Unit I completed by then.

9/11/09

Books are in.  Those who bring the $$ get the books.  All are required to pay the fee.  The fee pays for books and other material that I will be providing.

Material Fee:

Eng III and Eng III Honors $15  (includes copies of Elements of Style and The Scarlet Letter).  A copy of How to Read Literature Like a Professor can be purchased for $11.  ALL HONORS STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE A COPY OF HRLP.  All students are encouraged to purchase this book.

Eng IV $10 (includes a copy of Elements of Style).  Student can purchase a copy of How to Read Literature Like a Professor, but it is not required.  All are encouraged to purchase this book.

Extra credit for the purchase of HRLP will be given to those who purchase the book themselves or from me (my price is 25% off the bookstore price) by Monday.  Must bring it in and have it marked by me.  After Monday no extra credit will be awarded.
